Hiking / Day Hiking preparation – Layers

Day Hiking – Layers – video clip 1 of 4: in English here.

Here we are, it’s finally spring with day temperatures that are plus or minus reasonable and with what it seems the bulk of the pandemic behind us and re-opening signs here and there.. ye-epee! We each have had plenty of time to think of our next adventure and we’ve maybe even made plans and listed everything – from easy hikes to long mountain treks – that we want to do in an area that is bigger than the neighborhood we live in. As soon as we get the green light, we are going that’s for sure!

But wait a minute, have you thought of getting ready for these hikes or mountain treks in our provincial and national parks? do you have a list you can refer to with on it everything you need to take to practice a sport that seem to be the most simple in the world but that still demands for you to be ready!?

Not too worry, I’m here to help you! In the next couple of weeks, I am offering you a serie of 4 videos – on this blog and on my social media channels – so you can see how we really get ready to go hiking in our beautiful Canadian Rockies AND to make it a pleasant experience that you will want to repeat.. yes, you will see, it’s addictive! 🙂

I hope you will enjoy watching my video series!

Mind escape during worldwide pandemic

Do you take the time to read? Not online posts I mean, to read real books?! I now do again on regular basis and I absolutely LOVE the escape it provides to my mind!

RISING was given to me by my friend Karla and this last week transported me to Mt Everest with the 1986 expedition team from Canada. They were successful and Sharon Wood was the 1st North American woman to set foot on the highest peak of the earth.

I have met Sharon a few times – at our annual Women’s guides’potluck and mountain biking once – and have noticed and always enjoyed her soft ways, kindness and interest in others. This book confirmed to me her personality is now as it was then and yet described how truly hardcore she was in the mountains.

And what a team and team effort on that mountain!! I was super impressed and touched to read of the hardwork, dedication and humility of all team members.. because it isn’t always the case with climbers wanting a summit!

I hope you get to read it.. and if you already have let me know what you thought of it! Cheers, Nathalie, Nat’s Adventure Travel Founder

Inspired by nature

The trees and shrubs I see on my walks now show signs of spring! 🤩 They don’t seem to be affected by the current pandemic but I am quite certain they got their fair share of storms, droughts or parasites in the past!!! so what do you think they do to survive and even thrive every new spring huh? They dig down⬇️⬇️ with their roots because yes in the storms of life, what matters is to be and stay rooted! 🤜💥🤛 .

Wishing you the best of health and mental health – Nathalie, Founder

Worldwide pandemic and a travel company launch

It is quite reasonable to say that I have spent enough time in quarantine the last few months nursing this baby – yes my website! – as in to wanting to make it beautiful and appealing that I have built an internal joyous excitement for an official public launch on March 1 after finally getting all paperwork needed!

I will be honest though, I nowadays get rarely too excited – as in to jumping up and down in excitement – as it seems when I do, my planned projects or ideas seem to go haywire.. how strange! Now please do not think I am a doomed pessimistic, in the opposite, I seem to always see or find a positive outlook or solution but true enough, life seem to have taught me to temper the times when I am really excited.

March 9, after working on a few more background details, I finally made an official launch statement on my Instagram and Facebook pages with, as background noise on all media channels, the news of COVID-19 spreading worldwide. I had gotten used to hear about it but the seriousness of it really hit hard when I saw Italy’s death toll as Milan is only 3 hrs drive from the french part of Switzerland where I come from and a mere 1-1.5 hr drive from where I have dear friends.

I will conclude this post by saying this: my planned projects or ideas have not always happened as/when I had planned them – in my mind at least – and the “de-routing” or “re-routing” life has let happen has often been a “blessing in disguise” as the expression says. Had I launched earlier this year, I would now be dealing with cancellations of guests bookings, lodging booking etc.. but as of today, I am back on the starting blocks with time to perfect the summer/fall trips as well as next year’s.

So yes stay healthy, follow authorities’ recommendations and I will be in touch so we get to go on trips here in Canada or abroad as soon as the clouds lift ok!?

Snow-shoe trip with 2 nights in a snow-shelter

What a week, I almost forgot to mention the late February trip I guided with my ACMG colleague Peter in Kananaskis! The first day of the trip was scheduled for us to meet the students from the UofC Schulich School of Engineering at university and brief them on how to be prepared for a winter trip plus fill any remaining paper work. Later that morning we gathered in the Outdoor Centre rental area to give everyone backpacks, sleeping bags, bivi-bags, thermarests, stoves & fuel, pots & pans, shovels, snow-shoes etc.. the food was for them to decide what they wanted to cook with their snow-shelter partners. 1st team building effort right here! 🙂

In the morning, we fitted a big van with our 10 big packs, snow-shoes and people plus a few extra items and Peter – who was our main guide as well as chauffeur – drove us safely to Kananaskis. The previous day that area had seen temperatures in the -23oC range but the morning we arrived gifted us with -11oC only with the sun shining and a cloudless sky! After Peter had everyone briefed about the snow-shoes, we set off for a small trek to an area where we would set camp.
