NOUVELLES FRAICHES! Nous nous réjouissons de lancer nos Marches au clair de lune ce vendredi 5 juin! si vous n’avez jamais été en plein air ou marcher au clair de lune, voici votre chance d’y aller avec une guide certifiée à un prix très raisonable!
Let’s talk footwear! Yesterday i went on a hike which had a scree slope (= loose rock) to get to the ridge, yes we have a few like this in our beautiful Canadian Rockies! Some scree slopes are on mountains that have a hiking trail first and some are on what we call here “scrambles” which are harder than hikes.
So yesterday I saw someone struggling down the scree slope – in short shorts in the cold wind up there brrrr – who was wearing open toes birkenstocks 😲 Yikes!! It had a strap around the anckle which is the only good thing I could see about it.. barely any grip underneath, exposing most of the foot and especially the toes to the harshness of the rocks.
People PLEASE stop going for hikes up our mountains thinking you are going to the beach or something.. this is mountainous terrain and even if you don’t head up that scree slope close to the top, the trail lower down might be steep in places and most certainly will have roots, rocks, pebbles on hard ground or on rock slabs (which act as ball bearing = terrifying!).
Sometimes early season, parts of the trail will have hard packed snow or soft snow with ice underneath.. so Please do wear the right footwear! You can also refer to the gear / equipment list provided in our FAQ tab HERE.
Now we need more people educated on what it means to be prepared for outdoor adventures, so do me a favour and follow me on social media – IG and FB: Nats_AdventureTravels – like and share my educational posts and like and share my blog posts.. because yes, we need to have less costly rescues in our Rocky Mountains – both in BC or Alberta – this summer and always, thank you!
I’m pretty excited to announce that on Monday May 25th, we are launching our brand new serie of Calgary City Parks Hikes as a way to celebrate spring and the end of the longest confinement of modern times!
Nature is waiting for us, I hope you can leave your screens for a couple of hours and join me/us on the path of discovery and recovery, of local adventuring and forest bathing!
After our 1st episode on clothing we need to talk about shoes, backpacks and other important details especially for early season hiking! Of course I only show examples of what i have at home so you will need to do some online search to find what you need.
If you have any questions, I suggest you take notes and at the end of my serie of 4 videos, I will have a “live” video meeting so you can ask all your questions directly.. would this work for you!? I can’t wait to meet you then!
I think it’s time for me to finally share with everyone the beautiful Travel Alberta online brochure received late April! Re-opening phases are on and as we are all gitty to get going, this brochure is a great tool to at least get the planning process started!
Alberta doesn’t seem too known in eastern Canada and Europe so feel free to share with all your travelling friends and family members! Our beautiful and very diverse province has a lot to offer I can just tell you this! 🙂
You will see my ad for Nat’s Adventure Travels on page 27.. I can’t wait to help you plan your visit and adventures!
Here we are, it’s finally spring with day temperatures that are plus or minus reasonable and with what it seems the bulk of the pandemic behind us and re-opening signs here and there.. ye-epee! We each have had plenty of time to think of our next adventure and we’ve maybe even made plans and listed everything – from easy hikes to long mountain treks – that we want to do in an area that is bigger than the neighborhood we live in. As soon as we get the green light, we are going that’s for sure!
But wait a minute, have you thought of getting ready for these hikes or mountain treks in our provincial and national parks? do you have a list you can refer to with on it everything you need to take to practice a sport that seem to be the most simple in the world but that still demands for you to be ready!?
Not too worry, I’m here to help you! In the next couple of weeks, I am offering you a serie of 4 videos – on this blog and on my social media channels – so you can see how we really get ready to go hiking in our beautiful Canadian Rockies AND to make it a pleasant experience that you will want to repeat.. yes, you will see, it’s addictive! 🙂
Do you take the time to read? Not online posts I mean, to read real books?! I now do again on regular basis and I absolutely LOVE the escape it provides to my mind!
RISING was given to me by my friend Karla and this last week transported me to Mt Everest with the 1986 expedition team from Canada. They were successful and Sharon Wood was the 1st North American woman to set foot on the highest peak of the earth.
I have met Sharon a few times – at our annual Women’s guides’potluck and mountain biking once – and have noticed and always enjoyed her soft ways, kindness and interest in others. This book confirmed to me her personality is now as it was then and yet described how truly hardcore she was in the mountains.
And what a team and team effort on that mountain!! I was super impressed and touched to read of the hardwork, dedication and humility of all team members.. because it isn’t always the case with climbers wanting a summit!
I hope you get to read it.. and if you already have let me know what you thought of it! Cheers, Nathalie, Nat’s Adventure Travel Founder
The trees and shrubs I see on my walks now show signs of spring! 🤩 They don’t seem to be affected by the current pandemic but I am quite certain they got their fair share of storms, droughts or parasites in the past!!! so what do you think they do to survive and even thrive every new spring huh? They dig down⬇️⬇️ with their roots because yes in the storms of life, what matters is to be and stay rooted! 🤜💥🤛 .
Wishing you the best of health and mental health – Nathalie, Founder
